Running my first race: a 10k
So, I ran my first race two weeks ago: a 10k! For those more familiar with miles, it is equivalent to 6.2 miles. The 10k was a great experience. It was about 50 degrees outside, misting, and a little breezy. I ran with my two running buddies which made the race so much more fun! I did not realize that races are both defeating and exciting. I felt pretty defeated at first because everyone was taller and stronger than me. They passed me by within the first mile. For the first three miles, I was toward the back of the pack. I usually get comfortable toward four miles in. And like clockwork, I reached four miles and I took off. I started passing people one-by-one and was able to finish my 10k in 59:52, meeting my goal of under one hour! I was so excited at the end to meet my goal. Pretty good for my short legs and bum knees.
I would like to share a few 10k tips for any first time racers out there that I learned from my first 10k:
Learn to pace yourself: We started slow and sweet. This paid off in the long run. Those who took off fast in the beginning eventually ended up behind us (unless they were super intense runners). Find what pace you are comfortable sustaining, start there.
Don't get caught up in the beginning: A lot of people do not know how to pace themselves and they will start their race too fast. These people will pass you and you'll be tempted to keep up. Don't! Stay at your comfortable pace and plan to pass them later once you feel comfortable increasing your speed.
Have a game plan: I discussed this with my running buddies on several occasions before the race. I decided that my plan was to start nice and slow the first 3 miles, mile 3-4 transition into a faster pace, mile 4.5-end kick it into gear and finish strong. I believe that I might have initiated my "strong finish" a little too early. I felt pretty fatigued by the end of it. But it was worth it!
Look cute, feel confident: I always perform better when I am dressed the part. Fake it 'til you make it right? I even do this with exams, dressing up nice so that I feel confident. So I bought a new dryfit pullover and wore my favorite running tights. I wore makeup. I even fixed my hair in a cute pony. This tip isn't for everyone. Not everyone feels the need to look "cute" when exercising but it certainly helps me perform.
I am looking to run a half marathon in two weeks however, I am having issues with my right knee. I have torn my ACL and medial meniscus in both knees several years ago and am beginning to feel old injuries flare up again. Hopefully the pain goes away and I am able to complete another race! It is important to listen to your body in these situations, it is not worth having bum knees your whole life just to run one big race.
I will hopefully update the blog soon and let you know how it goes! Wish me luck!
